Modern Ablution Block, Iruri Primary School

Project Summary

Rotary Club of Nyeri and the Rotary Club of Elk Grove, California, built a modern ablution block at Iruri Primary School, replacing basic outhouses with safe, hygienic sanitation for about 350 pupils.

Community Need

About 350 pupils and 15 staff shared only ten small outhouses, simple holes in the floor, with no water for handwashing. The records describe an unsanitary situation that spread germs and likely caused missed days of school.

What We Did

Funded by a Global Grant, Rotary Club of Nyeri worked with the Rotary Club of Elk Grove to construct a modern ablution block, from site clearance and foundations to roofing, walling, plumbing and finishing. The Club also planned to continue sanitation and hygiene education for pupils and staff. The records describe it as the first water and sanitation programme of its kind in the region.
