Tumaini Academy Global Grant, Ol Moran

Project Summary

Rotary Club of Nyeri hosted a Global Grant with the Rotary Club of Jesi, Italy, to equip Tumaini Academy with solar power, boarding beds, furniture and energy-saving kitchens, strengthening a safe school for 415 children.

Community Need

Tumaini Academy is a parish school near Ol Moran serving children exposed to poverty, nomadism, early marriage, early pregnancy, FGM, domestic violence and school dropout. The school, with 382 registered pupils, had begun a boarding service in 2019 as a protective option for vulnerable children, but needed furnishings and power for its new buildings. The public electricity grid did not reach the area.

What We Did

As host club, Rotary Club of Nyeri assessed the school community’s needs, supervised implementation and reported to the international partner, who audited the reports and made the payments. The grant funded a 5 kW solar system, 40 bunk beds for the second dormitory, 60 tables and 240 chairs for the multipurpose hall, three energy-efficient kitchens with cooking equipment, and, later, new shelving for the kitchen and multipurpose room. The records confirm everything was purchased, installed and audited. Club members visited the school in February 2024.
