World Day Against Child Labour, King’ong’o Primary School

Project Summary

Rotary Club of Nyeri joined the county commemoration of World Day Against Child Labour at King'ong'o Primary School, raising awareness among pupils and giving 160 girls 320 packs of sanitary towels.

Community Need

The school is among those serving pupils from deprived backgrounds. The Nyeri County Labour Officer identified a need to raise awareness of the harm child labour does, because it can pull children out of school and carry consequences into adult life.

What We Did

Invited by the Nyeri County Labour Office and the International Labour Organization, the Club worked with four Rotaract clubs to raise awareness among pupils and to donate 320 packs of sanitary towels to 160 girls. The event followed the year’s theme, “Progress is clear, but there’s more to do: let’s speed up efforts”.

Impact

The project combined child protection, education, health and dignity. Awareness addressed child labour directly, while menstrual support removed a practical barrier to girls’ participation in school.

Long-Term Impact

Greater awareness of children's rights.
Better menstrual dignity.
Support for school participation.
More confidence among girls.
Pupils better able to recognize and resist exploitation.

Sustainability

Pupils who learn at a young age about the consequences of child labor carry that knowledge into later life and share it with peers and families.

The project paired child-protection awareness with practical menstrual support, helping vulnerable pupils understand the risks of child labor while supporting girls' dignity and continued schooling.
