Tree Planting at Gathiuru Forest

Project Summary

Rotary Club of Nyeri joined partners to plant 20,000 tree seedlings in the protected Gathiuru Forest, helping restore a degraded forest and contributing to climate action.

Community Need

Gathiuru Forest is a protected area that had become degraded. Restoring it reverses damage to the ecosystem and the services forests provide, including watershed protection and climate regulation.

What We Did

Rotary Club of Nyeri worked with the Rotary Club of Langata, the Kenya Defence Forces, the Kenya Forest Service, CER-K and Nyeri County to mobilise people and resources and plant 20,000 tree seedlings in the forest.

Impact

At this scale it is a large ecosystem restoration and climate-action project, not a symbolic planting. It moves Rotary’s environmental commitment from awareness to measurable restoration.

Long-Term Impact

Restoration of degraded forest.
Greater ecosystem resilience.
Biodiversity conservation.
Carbon sequestration as the trees mature.
Contribution to climate-change mitigation.
Protection of the ecosystem services the forest provides.

Sustainability

Because Gathiuru is a protected area, the Kenya Defence Forces and the Kenya Forest Service are responsible for the continued care of the planted trees.

The Gathiuru initiative moved Rotary's environmental commitment from awareness to measurable restoration, planting 20,000 seedlings to restore degraded forest, strengthen ecosystem resilience and contribute to climate action.
