Our Story — The History, Mission, and Values of the Rotary Club of Nyeri

Chartered in 2015 under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Milimani, discover how Rotary Club of Nyeri became part of a global network of over 1.4 million Rotarians — and the values that guide everything we do.

Every Rotary club begins the same way: a small group of people who believe that business and professional leaders have a responsibility to give back to the communities that sustain them. Rotary Club of Nyeri is no exception. Chartered in 2015 under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Milimani, our club was born from a simple conviction — that Nyeri’s professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders had both the capacity and the calling to make a measurable difference in the lives of the people around them.

As a member club of Rotary International District 9216, we are part of a global network of more than 1.4 million Rotarians across more than 46,000 clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. That global reach matters locally — it means that when Rotary Club of Nyeri identifies a need in our community, we are never working alone. We can draw on international partnerships, the resources of The Rotary Foundation, and the collective experience of clubs that have solved similar challenges elsewhere in the world.

Since our charter, the club has grown steadily, both in membership and in impact. In keeping with the Rotarian tradition of “each one, sponsor one,” Rotary Club of Nyeri has itself gone on to sponsor the Rotary Club of Karatina, extending the Rotary network further into our region. We have also nurtured the next generation of servant leaders by sponsoring Interact and Rotaract clubs — youth and young-adult service programs that give students and young professionals in and around Nyeri their first taste of organized community service, leadership development, and international fellowship. Watching those clubs grow, and in some cases watching their members eventually graduate into full Rotary membership, is one of the quiet, long-term achievements we’re proudest of.

At the center of everything we do is Rotary’s Four-Way Test, a simple ethical framework that has guided Rotarians worldwide since the 1930s. Before we speak, act, or commit the club’s resources to a project, we ask ourselves four questions: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL AND BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? It is a deceptively simple test, but it shapes how we choose projects, how we treat partners and beneficiaries, and how we conduct ourselves as individuals in our own professions and businesses.

Our mission is straightforward: to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Our vision extends that mission outward — we aim to be a club recognized in Nyeri and beyond for tangible, lasting impact, not just good intentions. We pursue that vision through Rotary International’s seven Areas of Focus: peacebuilding and conflict prevention, disease prevention and treatment, water, sanitation, and hygiene, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, community economic development, and the environment. These focus areas give structure to our project selection, ensuring that our energy and resources go toward the challenges where Rotarians are best positioned to help.

[Placeholder note for the client: this is an excellent place to add a short paragraph naming your founding members or first president, and a photo from the 2015 charter ceremony if one exists in the club’s archives.]

Ten years on from our charter, Rotary Club of Nyeri remains guided by the same principle that founded Rotary International back in 1905: that fellowship among professionals, anchored in service above self, can quietly change the world one community at a time. We invite you to read on and discover how you can be part of that story.
