Handwashing Liquid Soap Training, Majengo

Project Summary

Rotary and Rotaract clubs trained Majengo residents to make liquid handwashing soap, a skill that supports hygiene and can also become a source of income.

Community Need

The Majengo community needed practical knowledge that could improve hygiene and open up economic opportunities at the same time.

What We Did

Rotary Club of Nyeri, Rotary Club of Ngong Hills and the Rotaract clubs of DeKUT, Nyeri National Polytechnic and Ngong Hills trained residents of the Majengo sub-location in preparing liquid handwashing soap. The Club had practised the method in a members’ training session on 15 September 2025.

Impact

A strong dual-impact project. For health, handwashing removes germs, reduces the spread of infection and helps prevent food contamination. For livelihoods, the skill can be turned into income using locally available resources.

Long-Term Impact

Better hygiene awareness and practice.
A potential reduction in the burden of hygiene-related disease.
New skills in the community.
Potential income generation and stronger household livelihoods.

Sustainability

Unlike a one-off soap donation, teaching the production skill lets residents keep making soap after the project ends.

The Majengo initiative turned a public-health message into a practical economic opportunity, equipping residents with a skill that can improve hygiene and create income.
